For the Editorial Development unit within the “Academic & Research” arm of Karger Publishers, we are looking for a motivated person to join our organization as a 

Book Commissioning Editor 80-100%

Location: UK- based (remote only)

As part of the editorial team, you will be responsible for developing and managing a successful program of books within the health sciences. The role encompasses a wide array of editorial responsibilities from strategically identifying new title opportunities to overseeing the publishing process through to publication and beyond.


This multifaceted role includes:

  • Devising and implementing a successful book program strategy together with the Head of Editorial Development
  • Managing the review, development and acceptance of book proposals
  • Initiating and managing new book titles, identifying and appointing qualified Editors
  • Working closely with the Operations team to ensure timely delivery of commissioned titles
  • Building relationships within the scientific community and developing a network of editors, authors, and collaborators including societies in collaboration with Publication Managers
  • Collaborating with internal units to maximise the visibility and usage of the books
  • Point person for books within the Unit and for other Karger departments, including participation to internal Taskforces, if appropriate
  • Promoting the books and representing Karger to external stakeholders
  • Occasional travel to international conferences and to Karger’s headquarter in Basel, Switzerland


Qualification and experience required:

  • University degree in life or health sciences
  • Previous STM publishing experience with a focus on commissioning or acquiring content ideally for books in the medical/clinical fields
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and professionally with editors and authors
  • Highly organized, outstanding attention to detail and ability to work independently
