Business Development Manager South Korea (100%)


The Business Development Manager is responsible for planning and attaining company goals and objectives for South Korea reporting into the Head of Regional Office, Distributor and Agent Management (RODAM) in Karger’s head office. This challenging role offers an opportunity for an individual with exceptional sales and business development skills to help build the external client base in the context of our new company strategy which aims at increasing our product and service portfolio to stakeholders around the cycle of knowledge in the health sciences and moving our content portfolio toward Open Access.


This multifaceted role includes:

  • Extending Karger’s reach and network of Regional Offices to South Korea and further developing country specific strategies in the context of the Karger’s new company strategy, underpinned by the Karger-wide PACS (Publish, Access, Curate, and Services) portfolio, and developing our Regional Office strategy in close co-operation with Karger Basel
  • Grow the current Karger ecosystem, by engaging with our known network such as local agents and academic customers and (further) activating those across the Academia, Government Research, Hospitals & Healthcare and Industry to ensure our reach is extended beyond our current reach
  • Formulate strategy for growing the entire PACS portfolio across all relevant Karger Business Units including ARM (Academic and Research Markets), CPM (Clinical and Patient Markets), ISS (Industry and Society Services) and ED (Editorial Development) based on the Karger Explorative, Growth and Focus matrix
  • Effective planning with all Business Units ensuring successful renewals and growth of existing business and the development of new business
  • Work with the aforementioned Business Units to develop customer-centric PACS offerings to benefit the research and development workflow at all levels, from technicians to Sr Researchers operating large-scale research teams.
  • Work with the ED Heads to create publishing / editorial opportunities across South Korea in the context of growing Karger's journal and books (print and electronic) portfolio
  • Identify, activate and maintain relationships with KOL's from across the Medical Research landscape
  • Plan and maintain an efficient travel schedule for site visits; up to 50% of working month should be spent visiting customers
  • Participate in academia, industry and researcher events and conferences.  And identify new opportunities and audiences to present the new Karger company strategy and PACS portfolio to
  • Drive awareness and outreach programmes, as well as activities to grow article submissions through local Call for Paper activities with Academia, Gov't, Hospital and Industry Researchers
  • Handle administrative tasks (reporting of activities; costs), communication of offers, etc.

Qualification and experience required:

  • College degree
  • Miller Heiman (or similar) training / experience seen as a benefit
  • Publishing / Medical industry sales experience is desirable
  • Minimum 5-7 years-experience in STM Publishing environment
  • Excellent IT knowledge (Microsoft Office / 365, Salesforce etc.)
  • Language skills - English: excellent command (proficiency), Korean: excellent command (proficiency); further languages would be an advantage
  • Professional multi-tasker with an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Strong commercial and business acumen, and can work well under pressure to meet deadlines and deliver KPI’s
  • Excellent written communication skills and strong presentation skills
  • Strong self-starter qualities: ability to organize work without team support on site
