Within the Editorial Development unit of Karger Publishers we are seeking a driven, solution-oriented and strategically minded professional for the role of

Indexing Manager (80-100%)

Location: UK (remote only) or Switzerland (hybrid)

Full time position – 40 hours per week. Applicants for an 80% pro-rata contract will also be considered.

Working closely with multiple units across the organization, the Indexing Manager role is responsible for enhancing the discoverability, visibility and reputation of Karger’s journals and articles by ensuring they are appropriately indexed in relevant repositories and indexing services. This position provides a great opportunity to make a positive impact on our editorial portfolio by developing and executing indexing strategies to expand journal coverage, ensuring efficient and complete content indexing, and increasing the awareness and engagement with indexing databases and repositories.


Key responsibilities

Technical and Operational

  • Understand the technical requirements, processes and configurations for indexing journals and content, and oversee all indexing processes to ensure efficient and reliable article deposition and indexation. 
  • Perform regular monitoring, analyses and audits of content indexing coverage and proactively identify and resolve missing content issues in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate investigations when depositing or indexing errors arise to ensure correct coverage, inclusion and back indexation of content. 
  • Effectively collaborate with our Digital Landscape unit to recommend and coordinate improvements to platforms and digital tools required for consistent content deposition to external repositories. 
  • Effectively collaborate with our Data and Insights units to ensure all indexing data is integrated into our data warehouse and that indexing reports/dashboards are created and maintained in line with requirements.
  • Lead quality-control initiatives focused on indexing, efficiency and industry compliance. 

Strategic

  • Oversee the indexing strategy for all major indexes (e.g.: Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed Central, MEDLINE, DOAJ) and ensure compliance with indexing database requirements and publishing regulations. 
  • Oversee all indexing pipelines, including monitoring of journal performance against indexing requirements, making strategic recommendations of when to put forward journals for indexation
  • Support the preparation of indexing applications in collaboration with Editorial Development team
  • Provide guidance to Publication Managers on indexing queries from indexing bodies to expand/maintain indexing coverage and make strategic recommendations on corrective actions, as needed.
  • Provide guidance to Operation Managers on complex indexing author queries that cannot be answered based on indexing coverage reports alone.
  • Collaborate with and provide guidance to Editorial teams to maintain high-quality standards that meet indexing requirements.
  • Develop strong partnerships between Karger and top indexing databases
  • Investigate and approach potential new repository partners to further increase the discoverability/reach of Karger’s publications.


Skills and Experience

  • Strong STM publishing experience, with a focus on indexing and journal development
  • Strong familiarity with major indexing databases and solid understanding of indexing requirements and journal performance metrics
  • Solid knowledge of indexing processes and technical requirements for indexing databases and repositories
  • Strong analytical skills and proven ability to understand complex data and make decisions effectively
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail
  • Experience working with XML formats and content transfer protocols
  • Proactive attitude especially in troubleshooting, identifying issues and coordinating resolution between different units and with external service providers, as needed
  • Strong team player with capability to work effectively in a highly cross-functional environment
  • Ability to establish and nurture strong relationships with indexing and repository partners and represent Karger externally, as needed
  • Familiarity with bibliometric indicators and research impact measures
