For the Editorial Development unit within the “Labs” arm of Karger Publishers, focusing on strategy and innovation, we are looking for a motivated person to join our organization as a

Publication Manager (80-100%)

In this role you will develop and manage publications in one or several subject areas. Reporting to the Head of Editorial Development, you will be working independently within an agreed strategic framework.


This multifaceted role includes:

  • Supporting the Head of Editorial Development in driving journal growth and development
  • Independently managing a portfolio of publications in assigned subject areas, including monitoring the progress of publications towards defined targets in terms of content, usage, quality, and reputation
  • Setting up and fostering editorial boards, subject area-specific communities, and networks of influencers
  • Representing and promoting your publication portfolio and Karger to external stakeholders
  • Point person providing subject/ publication-specific insights for other Karger departments and the team of Publication Specialists within Editorial Development
  • Representing Editorial Development in company-wide projects and taskforces
  • The role will require national and international travel to scientific conferences and meetings with editors, up to 35% of the time

Qualification and experience required:

  • Ph.D. in life or health sciences
  • Significant editorial experience in scientific journal publishing including open access
  • Previous experience in journal development and/or content commissioning preferred
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English (German or additional languages a plus)
  • A collaborative, proactive, and problem-solving mindset
  • Highly organized, outstanding attention to detail and ability to work under time pressure
  • Very good IT skills (MS Office, etc.)
