Karger Publishers is looking for a motivated professional to join our Management Team as a

Head of Academic & Research Markets (100%)

(this is a full time position in Basel, Switzerland)


in the «Experience» arm of the organization focused on communication and sales.


The “Academic & Research Markets (ARM)” unit is responsible for the development of relationships with key customers in the academic market, such as universities, research institutes, hospitals with research facilities and academic consortia. The focus of the unit lies on fulfilling the science communication needs of these customers in the context of the Karger PACS (Publish, Access, Curate, Service) portfolio and the transition to Open Science.

Reporting directly to Karger’s Chief Executive Officer, you will be working independently within an agreed strategic framework, while closely co-operating with your fellow Management Team members and our international distribution network.


In this multifaceted role, you will:

  • Develop the market for Karger products and services that go beyond subscriptions, keeping pace with the global transition to Open Science
  • Propose and implement the strategic framework for “Academic & Research Markets”
  • Manage Product Managers and Key Account Managers
  • Work very closely with the Head of Regional Office, Distributor and Agent Management to define and achieve sales targets in our international markets
  • Liaise with your Management Team colleagues to create the best conditions for the success of our products and services through development, planning, process design and controlling
  • Contribute to the strategic development of Karger as a member of “Circles” (topical decision-making bodies)
  • Travel on business (visiting customers, attending events and library conferences)

To be successful, you will bring:

  • 5-10 years of work experience in science publishing, preferably in a Product Management or Sales role
  • Profound knowledge of the international developments in science communication (Open Science)
  • An academic background or relevant professional experience, preferably in the Health Sciences
  • Outstanding skills in integrating the needs of various stakeholders
  • Talent as an organizer
  • An excellent command of English; German (spoken) or willingness to learn; further languages (e.g. Spanish, Chinese) would be an advantage
  • Very good IT skills (MS Office, etc.)
  • A willingness to travel on business (approx. 60 days a year)
